Planning Aftercare From Day One

The transition out of inpatient treatment is one of the most vulnerable stages of recovery for those suffering from serious drug addictions. Recreating the structure of a rehab on your return home can be challenging, but it is possible. For this reason, aftercare planning begins early in treatment. Clients work with therapists to identify high-risk situations, emotional triggers, and realistic strategies for managing them.

Aftercare may include:

  • Step-down phase in month 3 (living at One Step while gaining some independence to go into the city alone, or in pairs)
  • Moving on to a dedicated sober living house in the city (we work closely with one trusted service provider)
  • Continued individual therapy after discharge via our network of providers
  • Online group counselling in our aftercare group (free for 12 months)

At One Step Rehab, our goal is not to create dependence on our treatment system but to support the development of autonomy, resilience, and sustainable peer-led recovery.

Why Aftercare Is Critical to Recovery

For many people, the greatest challenge in addiction recovery is not stopping drug or alcohol use inside a structured rehab environment — it is maintaining recovery after returning home. Once treatment ends, clients are again exposed to old environments, stressors, social circles, routines, and emotional triggers that may have previously contributed to substance use.

Research consistently shows that ongoing recovery support improves long-term outcomes and reduces relapse risk. Structured aftercare helps clients maintain accountability, rebuild healthy routines, strengthen social support networks, and continue developing the coping skills learned during treatment.

Relapse Prevention Planning

Cravings are a normal part of early recovery and are often short-lived. Primary treatment focuses on teaching clients how to respond to urges without acting on them. While at rehab, our clients identify personal triggers (people, places, and things) that are risky for them. They then place these triggers into a 3 Zone Relapse Prevention Plan.

Active Zone

Drugs and behaviours that must be stopped

Danger Zone

Triggers, places, and situations to be avoided

Recovery Zone

Things you should do that will promote recovery

Online Aftercare and Recovery Meetings

Once clients leave treatment they should engage in aftercare. Most rehabs offer free online aftercare for 8 weeks post-treatment. At One Step Rehab we offer an industry-unique 12 months of free aftercare.

Our online aftercare takes place every Saturday and is convenient for all time zones. This guarantees that you will have a link back to your treatment team and recovery peers well into your early sobriety.

It also helps to attend 12-Step fellowship meetings when you return home. These meetings are free, widely available in most countries, and provide ongoing peer support, accountability, structure, and connection with others in long-term recovery.

Many people find that regular fellowship attendance helps reinforce the routines, coping strategies, and recovery principles first developed during treatment.

Common Recovery Fellowships

  • Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)
  • Narcotics Anonymous (NA)
  • Cocaine Anonymous (CA)
  • Crystal Meth Anonymous (CMA)
  • Al-Anon (for families and loved ones)

Alternatives to 12-Step Programmes

  • SMART Recovery
  • Refuge Recovery

Sober living extended care in Chiang Mai after rehab at One Step

Extended Care at a Sober House in Chiang Mai

Extended care (also known as ‘sober house’ or ‘sober living’) can also be arranged after your stay at One Step Rehab. Local sober houses in Chiang Mai offer a place to live in the city for 2–12 months, where basic recovery support is provided.

For some clients, transitioning directly from residential rehab back into normal life can feel overwhelming. Sober living provides an intermediate stage between treatment and full independence, allowing clients to continue building structure, routine, accountability, and recovery habits in a lower-pressure environment.

During this phase, many clients continue attending therapy, recovery meetings, fitness programmes, and peer support groups while gradually returning to work, study, travel, or independent living. Please speak to us if you wish to access a sober house facility after your stay at One Step, and it can be arranged.

Family Support & Involvement

When you leave our centre you will be given a comprehensive aftercare plan. If required, we can also write our discharge recommendations for your therapist or loved ones should they also wish to be involved in treatment. Family engagement in treatment is highly encouraged, as studies show that it produces higher recovery rates, especially amongst younger client groups.

Addiction rarely affects only the individual. Family members and loved ones are often deeply impacted by the stress, unpredictability, and emotional strain associated with long-term substance use. Where appropriate, we encourage healthier communication, clearer boundaries, and greater understanding of the recovery process so that family relationships can become a source of support rather than conflict or enabling behaviour.

Our goal is to help clients return home with a stronger recovery plan and a more stable support network around them.
